The Detroit Red Wings are down 2 games to 1 in their first round playoff series against Edmonton. Things are not looking good in Hockeytown at this point.

Up the road in Auburn Hills, the outlook is much better as the Pistons took the first two games from Milwaukee.

The Detroit Tigers return home in second place in the American League Central division, just two games behind the defending World Series champion White Sox. The Tigers are currently at the top of the AL wild card standings. It has been a long hard trip back to being a contender, but it looks as though the Tigers at last have a solid team that can make baseball season in the Motor City fun again.

Very good news from 1265 Lombardi Avenue...that being the address of Lambeau Field in Green Bay.

Brett Favre is coming back for at least one more season with the Green and Gold!

The Packers signed free agent cornerback and Heisman winner...from the University of Michigan...Charles Woodson! And he wants to play some offense too!

I can see it now...Favre to Woodson for the winning TD in the Super Bowl!

Go Pack Go!

Oh yeah...Dan Marino, you are officially TOAST! Kiss all your career passing records GOODBYE, because they will soon belong to the guy in the green number four jersey!

Things that bug the crap out of me...the trend in the Inane Mainstream Media to refer to Hollywood celebrity couples by one merged name of both people...examples being "TomKat" and "Brangelena." Enough already! These names are jejune and annoyingly cutesy, not to mention that most of these Hollywood Plastic People couples end up breaking up days after getting married anyway.

OK, then....how about some picks for the first round of the Stanley Cup playoffs???

Ottawa over Tampa Bay...why does Tampa freakin' Bay even HAVE a hockey team, anyway?

Montreal over Carolina...another series pitting a Traditional Hockey Town against a town where they probably didn't even know what a puck looked like until ten years ago.

New York Rangers over New Jersey.

Philadelphia over Buffalo.

That takes care of the Eastern Conference...so what about the Western?

The eventual Stanley Cup Champions (that would be the Detroit Red Wings of course) will have no problem with their first round opponents (Edmonton Oilers).

Dallas over Colorado in a match of Teams I as a Red Wings Fan Cannot Stand One Bit.

Calgary over the silly, ridiculous, comical "Mighty Ducks of Anaheim." The Ducks have two strikes against them...their location in South California and their stupid, movie inspired nickname.

Nashville over San Jose...why do either of these cities have ice hockey teams????

Now it appears that the Bush administration is considering using "bunker buster" tactical nuclear (or "nucular" as the Moron in Chief might say it) weapons against Iran's alleged underground nuclear sites.

So let me get this straight...the United States might use nuclear weapons in order to punish another country for (perhaps) attempting to build nuclear weapons.

The imperial hypocrisy and hubris of the United States is revealed yet again. I feel like a broken record pointing this out time after time. How can the U.S. expect other countries to do what the U.S. is unwilling to do, in this case, to disarm itself of nuclear weapons?

Not to mention the idiocy of further military action against a part of the world that has already suffered far too much of this from the U.S., this being of course the real reason why "they hate us."

After starting the 2006 season with five wins in a row, the Detroit Tigers have now lost three straight and have fallen out of first place. All three losses have been close, and the last two have been against the defending World Series champion White Sox. So we will see what we will see as far as this year's Tigers.

The Red Wings clinched the President's Cup which goes to the NHL team with the best regular season record, but of course they have their eyes on another Cup...the one named after Lord Stanley.

Motown's entry in the men's NBA is also on the verge of clinching best regular season record and home court advantage for the duration of the playoffs. I see them getting it, and both them and the Wings bringing championships home to Detroit. Or Auburn Hills, in the case of the Pistons.

Michigan women's gymnastics wins the NCAA northeast regional and advances to the national championship meet. This is a program that has been consistently excellent in recent years but has yet to take that last step and win a national championship. They will do it this time around.

Michigan softball is the defending national champ, and although they have struggled some this season they are still in fine shape at 25-10 overall and 5-1 in the Big Ten. A trip to Iowa is next, where the Wolverines will face another perennial Big Ten contender in the Hawkeyes.

The case for impeaching George W. Bush gets even stronger, as "Scooter" Libby testifies before federal grand jury that Dubya himself gave the green light to "Scooter" to leak classified information to the NY Times in retaliation against a critic of the administration propaganda about Iraq's supposed "weapons of mass destruction."

Furthermore, the Dubya administration is also pushing forward with gross violations of American civil liberties and privacy via wiretapping and other spying.

And so we backslide a bit more towards the Nixon era, with Curious George playing the role of Tricky Dick. They both waged devastating wars of aggression, they both had little concern for civil liberties or fair play, and they were both wholly owned tools of the Capitalist Ruling Class (as has been true of just about every other US president with the possible exception of Jimmy Carter). Nixon was forced to resign under threat of impeachment. There is hope that a similar fate may happen to Boy George. There is plenty of public sentiment for impeachment, and now we will see if congress (including the all too often spineless Democratic Party elected officials) will have the courage to do the right thing and impeach Bush.

Of course, the changes that need to happen are much more deep than just getting rid of one particularly bad president. We need to get better people in general into office, and I think that Green Party candidates are the best choices.

Looks like I was wrong about the women's NCAA champion as well, as Maryland beat Duke in a thrilling overtime final game. Duke led by 13 at one point and looked to be in good shape. But the Terrapins chipped away at the deficit and tied it with a three pointer to force the extra session. It was a low scoring overtime, with Maryland doing what they needed to do to get the win.

Since the Chicago White Sox lost their second game, the Detroit Tigers are for the nonce all alone in first place in the American League Central division. They will try to stay there with a win over Kansas City in a game that starts shortly. If they can win that game, they will join the Pistons and the Red Wings as three Detroit teams in first place at the same time. Of course, the Pistons and Red Wings have been consistently good of late while the Tigers have struggled, but it is early in the season so we will see what we will see, now won't we?

Florida drubs UCLA to win the men's NCAA basketball title. I really did not think that the Gators would win as convincingly as they did, or even that they would win at all although to the extent that I cared either way, I guess I wanted Florida to win. Not that I necessarily like them all that much, but UCLA already has a full trophy case and I am still pissed at the Bruins for beating Gonzaga.

Tonight we have Maryland vs. Duke for the NCAA women's championship. I picked Duke to win it at the start of March Madness (which it turns out carries over into April) and so I will stick with the Blue Devils.

In baseball news, my favorites the Detroit Tigers are tied for first place with the defending World Series champion Chicago White Sox! Granted, only one game has been played and the Tigers only had to beat the godawful Kansas City Royals. But still, it is nice to see the Tigers in first place. Hopefully it will last a while.

And in San Diego, a Padres fan tossed a syringe on the field at San Francisco's Barry Bonds, who is accused of using steroids.
